What Sells Most on Best Buy Marketplace: Early Category Signals

Published August 21, 2026 · Updated August 21, 2026

Executive Summary

Best Buy's third-party marketplace is new and growing. What Best Buy officially says about it, how it differs from Amazon, and which item groups are worth testing first — without inventing early numbers.

The short answer

Best Buy Marketplace is too new for anyone—including Best Buy itself—to publish a “top sellers by category” table. What the official record establishes is scope, not rankings: the marketplace launched August 19, 2025 in the US on Mirakl technology, more than doubling the number of products available online and adding categories well beyond electronics. Best Buy's most recent quarterly reporting (Q1 FY27, May 2026) cites Marketplace alongside Ads as a driver of gross-profit-rate growth.

So an honest answer to “what sells most?” has two layers. First, what Best Buy says it is stocking and promoting—documented below from its own announcements. Second, what a seller or brand should test first given that assortment strategy. We flag clearly where we are reasoning from the company's stated merchandising direction rather than from sales data, because no public sales data exists yet.

What Best Buy officially says about its marketplace

  • Launch: August 19, 2025, on BestBuy.com and the Best Buy app, powered by Mirakl; announced January 16, 2025 with a “summer 2025” target.
  • Scale claim: “more than doubling our total assortment and tripling it in some areas,” with hundreds of new brands added at launch.
  • New categories named: seasonal décor, automotive tech, office and home, movies and music, licensed sports merchandise via Fanatics, small kitchen appliances, floor care, furniture, musical instruments, toys, and collectibles.
  • Electronics expansion: more options from Samsung, Microsoft, LG, Lenovo, and HP; gaming accessories from Razer, MSI, and others; a tripled mobile-accessory assortment; and established consumer- electronics resellers such as Beach Camera, World Wide Stereo, and Antonline joining as sellers.
  • Omnichannel tie-ins: marketplace items can be returned at local Best Buy stores as well as shipped back to sellers, and store associates can help customers build carts that include marketplace items—a structural difference from pure e-commerce marketplaces.
  • Financial signal: in Q1 FY27 (quarter ended May 2, 2026), domestic gross profit rate rose to 23.7% from 23.5%, with management attributing part of the improvement to growth in Marketplace and Best Buy Ads.

One caveat on geography: the launch announcements describe the US experience. Best Buy operates retail in Canada, and it previously ran a US third-party marketplace from 2011 to 2016, but we did not find official confirmation of a Canadian marketplace launch in the sources reviewed for this article. Treat Canada availability as unconfirmed until Best Buy announces it.

How it differs from selling on Amazon

DimensionBest Buy MarketplaceAmazon (US)
Traffic baseDestination retail traffic with high purchase intent for techGeneral-purpose, search-first shopping traffic
Assortment logicCurated extension of an electronics brand; non-tech chosen to complement setupsNear-unbounded catalog across all categories
Seller mixNamed national retailers and brands at launchHundreds of thousands of sellers with a heavy long tail
ReturnsIn-store returns at Best Buy locations plus mail-back to sellerPrimarily mail-based, with limited physical drop-off
AdvertisingBest Buy Ads extends onto marketplace placementsMature, highly competitive ad auction
Data historyMonths old; no public bestseller ranks yetDecades of public rank, review, and pricing history

The strategic implication cuts both ways: competition per listing is thinner than on Amazon today precisely because the marketplace is young, but demand-discovery tools are immature too. Early movers can establish review bases and placement history before the field crowds—if they pick categories where Best Buy's traffic actually converts.

Item groups worth testing first

This table reflects Best Buy's own stated assortment additions and the structure of its traffic. It is a testing framework ordered by evidence strength—not a sales ranking, which nobody can honestly publish yet.

Reading early signals without inventing numbers

Because no public bestseller data exists for this marketplace yet, disciplined observation beats speculation:

  • Track listing counts by category weekly. Growth in active listings shows where Best Buy is recruiting sellers—and where competition will thicken first.
  • Watch buy-box and offer counts on anchor SKUs in electronics; that is where marketplace offers will compete hardest with first-party retail.
  • Pull search results for head queries (“gaming chair,” “air fryer,” “4K steelbook”) and note how often marketplace items outrank first-party ones.
  • Snapshot review velocity on new listings. Reviews accumulate slowly everywhere, so early differentials are informative even when absolute counts are small.
  • Record promo mechanics. Whether marketplace items join Best Buy's sale events tells you how seriously the retailer is merchandising them.

A disappearing listing or a sold-out flag is an availability event, not proof of units sold. Keep that distinction in your schema from day one; conflating the two is the error most early analyses of young marketplaces make.

For brands and data teams

The right first dataset here is small and frequent rather than broad and sparse: a fixed basket of SKUs and queries spanning electronics and the new adjacencies, observed daily, with offers, placement, availability, and reviews captured separately. That yields a defensible picture of where marketplace supply is landing within Best Buy's traffic before you commit budget. Our general approach to this kind of monitoring is described in the rankings monitoring guide.

Bottom line

Best Buy Marketplace opened in August 2025 as a curated, Mirakl-powered extension of America's largest electronics retailer, and its earliest real opportunities sit where Best Buy says they are: gaming and mobile accessories, small appliances, furniture that completes tech setups, seasonal goods, and the returning movies category. No public sales ranking exists yet, so treat every claimed “top item” list with suspicion and let observed listings, placement, and availability build the evidence base instead.
